Blurb: The major aim of the work is to further explore the idea of Consensual Hypervisibility, which was initially brought forth by the Attraction/Aversion project. The piece is meant to challenge prevailing notions of black femininity and sexuality (i.e. as “things to be consumed”). The mobile eye illustrates the inherent power that comes with the choice to meet someone’s gaze or avert it. Staring into someone’s eyes is a clear signal & affirmation of his/her/their personhood-- and being able to look into or look away from someone’s eye signals agency as it denies access to their interiority.

Blurb: This work is a commentary on the two similarly dilapidated, yet hauntingly beautiful, buildings in both Palenedra, Switzerland, and Oakland, California. The architecture in the Swiss Alps is widely regarded as beautiful in a romantic Italian countryside kind of way. By contrast, the Victorian houses in Old Oakland are similarly intricate and beautiful, but because of their locations, histories, and contexts, they are valued differently.
